Every year on November 3rd, the UAE Flag Day, the red, green, white and black flags flutter in the sky of the desert country, like a flowing epic. This national flag, which embodies unity and courage, and the local peacock lighter, tell a story about inheritance and tenacity. The red in the national flag symbolizes the spirit of sacrifice, the green represents the fertility of the land, the white is a prayer for peace, and the black highlights the deep power given by oil. The peacock growing in the desert can bloom golden flowers in extreme drought, just like the survival wisdom tempered by the UAE people in the harsh environment. Local craftsmen incorporate the form of this plant into handmade lighters, and its precise gears and leaping flames are endowed with the profound meaning of “igniting hope” – just as desert travelers use sparks to guide the direction, a country also needs the fire of faith to illuminate the way forward. At the National Flag Day celebration, people held peacock lighters to light the memorial candlesticks, and the leaping flames reflected the fluttering national flag. At this moment, the physical fire was sublimated into spiritual inheritance. The crisp sound of the lighter gears turning is like the rhythm of the wheel of history rolling forward, reminding every UAE citizen: Only by guarding the eternal fire of faith in their hearts can the courage and wisdom of the nation be as everlasting as peacock grass.
